Hey, everybody :) Sooo…this is my first attempt (ever) at recording guitar, drums, looping/editing & mixing of a riff/song idea.

Here’s the story of how it happened: One day we were watching an episode from that cool 1970’s series “Land of the Lost” (That show with the family that gets stuck in pre-historic times…it has all of these old, low-budget, very cool, special effects from the 70’s & was produced by the legendary Sid and Marty Krofft.)

Well, my favorite character was always the Sleestak not only were they just cool but I loved the sounds & music that came into play when they were in a scene…and this makes sense why? Because I thought to myself how fun it would be to kinda re-create my own version of the Sleestak sound with the guitar. I told K (my hubby) and he said “Let’s do this”!! I said “H*ll Yeah”…LOL! :P

Being that it was totally spur of the moment (and having never done this before) I just plugged my Ibanez into my Boss ME-70 effects pedal directly into the computer (Cubase LE w/ interface) I did not use any presets from the pedal all of the effects added were my own settings. No computer effects were added to anything so what you hear is exactly how it sounded as I was playing it.

The settings between the intro and the main riffs are slightly different. With the Intro I was going for that Eerie, Cicada like “Sleestak” effect…that was my version of it anyway and I have always liked controlled feedback sounds myself.

Each drum track was recorded individually (what a pain) and the drum sounds were taken from a keyboard. I added the double-bass drums for that “Vinnie-Paul” feel and dropped them out at times to add to the over all feel of everything. The guitar parts were actually recorded first then the drums were added.

I had wanted to do a beginning, middle, end deal but didn’t get to the ending this time so it stops abruptly. I have ideas for a guitar solo after I record a better version. The “click” you hear in some of the parts is from creating a loop, the click is actually an upstroke from the strumming but cut off. (I was practicing with the different features of computer recording…neat stuff!)

It’s not perfect and needs work. My guitar hadn’t been set up yet at the time so the tremolo/whammy was too tight and the strings were beyond dead so I couldn’t get all of the sounds I desired. I didn’t get everything I wanted out of it but took the best of what was there to at least have the opportunity to work with the recording program & the drums. It was a great learning experience for me and most of all I had fun doing it!

I wouldn’t have gotten this far either without my hubby K & Everyone’s help and knowledge shared…So Thanks, Everybody !! There’s a lot of good people here! I hope to learn more & get better with everything. ;)

It is what it is…Enjoy!
Thanks
~Chris

You watched "Land Of The Lost" too? Hahaha!!

I like it Chris! Nice tempo!! I was getting a lot of solo ideas while listening to it. GREAT job, and keep recording! :)

Hey Chris...Awesome!! Love the recording and the concept. I used to watch "Land of the Lost," and enjoyed the Sleestaks  . Keep up the recordings when the inspiration strikes you! Don't forget your "Chunky Clunker." I wanna hear some recordings on that, too. ;)

loved that show as a kid! aahhhh, saturday morning sugar rush and no school....

very cool chris! like G says "ABR": always be recording.

ever heard the story of the rolling stone's "satisfaction" (2004's #2 greatest rock songs of all time):

Quote:
Keith Richards states that he came up with the guitar riff for the song in his sleep, waking up in the middle of the night, recording the riff and the words "I can't get no satisfaction" on a cassette recorder and promptly falling back to sleep.[2] He would later describe the tape as: "two minutes of 'Satisfaction' and 40 minutes of me snoring.

Strange bro... I had a dream about a song too, but I didn't record it. I still have the riffs in mind though. I can't explain it, but it's got potential. I will say it starts off mellow and gets VERY heavy (in a good way), then changes over to mellow again, then back to heavy.

Great work Chris. Playing all those instruments definitely would be a challenge.
From the way things sound, it's like you played the drums first because your rhythm matches the drum tempo. Your timing sounds great. Keep those recordings coming!

Thanks for listening Guys,
I appreciate the nice comments & the support!! It's inspiring :)

Glad, I'm not the only person that liked that show. I like stuff from the 70's. It's neat what can spark an idea sometimes... even more fun when you just go with it & see what happens.

Thanks JT, I made it...thinking it would be cool to solo over, feel free to solo over it yourself & have some fun! Long distance jam...haha. I want to hear these HEAVY riffs I keep hearing about!! ;)

Thanks Mista, Glad you enjoyed the concept...it was fun for me! Ah yes, The Chunky Clunker was played today...LOL! Thanks for the support, you keep recording too, brother! 8-)

Thanks Mark, Glad you thought it was cool! 8-) "ABR" I like that...G is the man! That story was so Great, I never knew that...I love that "Behind the Music"/ "Story Tellers" stuff. I need some cool dreams like that...lol

Thanks Cube, for the kind words! I look forward to hearing your new song :)

Thanks Fly, What a compliment...I really appreciate that, I work hard on my timing and I really loved my days as a rhythm guitarist in a band. That was a computerized drum machine but the sounds came from an old Roland keyboard :)

I'm excited to record again and would like to do a take 2 on this, re-record the guitar parts & add a solo/ ending...some other things. I'm working on getting set-up for that with my own stuff and will hopefully be recording again soon.

You can be tougher with me about things on version 2...I can take it! lol
I'm always looking to improve my playing and still working on my sound(s) I really have no idea who I sound like...if anyone? All Feedback & Input are welcome here...Thanks again.

~Chris :P

I'll download it and play around with some stuff. ;)

Do you want any bass? It's been a while since I played, but my brother has a couple kickass Ibanez basses. I play those like guitars though, but sometimes I can get a funky groove going. If you listen to that tune "Explorer" you'll know what I mean.

What does K play?

As for the "heavy" stuff coming soon. It's not thrash or that death metal crap. More of a Lynch, Maiden, Priest, Sabbath mixed influence.

P.S. Did you send me a PM? I got one, but it said it was deleted before sent for some reason. If it was important, send it again.

Have fun with it :) I can play a little bass too but it probably wouldn't be anything great...haha. Your bass playing is much better!

K, is actually a Producer but he played Oboe in highschool...LOL! Here's a little know tid-bit about me...I played "first" string Violin in Elementary & high school Orchestra for @ 9 years ...LOL!

I actually was taking both violin & guitar lessons for several years but finally couldn't keep up with both instruments, school, a job, a band, a boyfriend etc. etc. Sooo...I dropped the violin and concentrated on Guitar b/c I thought it was much cooler 8-)

Look forward to hearing the heavy stuff! Are you talking about at 80's MM...the PM? I'm getting used to the set-up and think I "clicked" on some stuff accidentally..Doh! haha :geek:
