Nice one Jay, enjoy it! I've never listened to any of these bands before, but spent the last half hour on YouTube being educated. You've got to share a stage with that?! No pressure...

I need to arrange a few things first but I'm gonna try and make it over to the Glasgow show. I'll maybe drop you an email if I can make it.

I haven't been at the Cathouse for years. I recall it was always a real classy place - for some reason the floor was always sticky...

Stuart.

I went to see Eden's Curse in Glasgow last night, and met up with Jay after the show. It was kinda busy, everybody was trying to introduce people to everyone else, and quite a few fans were getting autographs (Jay's a rock star!) but we managed to have a couple of conversations. Well, more like we took it in turns to shout into each others ears, because Firewind had come on stage by then!

I'd only known Jay through the Dojo forum, and we once exchanged emails, so I had a few preconceptions before meeting him. I have to say he was exactly as I expected - a really nice guy, happy, chilled, and surprisingly relaxed for someone who was only just off stage. And I'm now the proud owner of a couple of his signature picks! Never mind a recording contract, you know you've made it if you've got your name on your pick...
This tour with Firewind and Stratovarius is only 7 or 8 gigs, but he told me he's having a blast being out on the road and getting on really well with his bandmates. I had a quick chat with a couple of them (Paul, bass, & Thorsten, lead gtr) and they've got just the same attitude - down to earth and having fun, not a trace of any ego. Thorsten is a fantastic player, left handed with his strings upside down so the low E is nearest the floor. Doesn't look comfortable to me, but it obviously suits him.

So, on to the gig review. Doors opened at 7pm, and after joining the back of a looong queue I was just in the door and half-way up the stairs when I heard the intro tape start at 7.20. No idea what the capacity of the Cathouse is, but it was full. I'd guess 500-750 people? I squeezed down to the front, with one person between me and Jay, and with half of the band blocked from view by a 2 feet wide concrete column in front of the stage. Not ideal, but I'm sure it's there for a reason. Jay was playing his Lynch Serpent for most of the show, swapping to another unidentified ESP for the last song. He got to share a couple of twin leads, but was mainly on rythm duty although I can assure you all it was much more than power chords. As the opening act they only had a short time, but he'll get his chance to shred when they play longer shows. The space on stage was really cramped and I was convinced he was going to get a bass guitar in the face, but somehow he knew when to duck, and survived unscathed. Sound was pretty poor for all 3 bands, with a few blasts of feedback, and it was hard to pick out one guitar in the mix, but our boy looked very comfortable, played some impressive looking chord shapes and no wrong notes. It was a bit more melodic than I'd expected and very good. Couldn't tell you all the songs but Angels & Demons (surely a copyright infringement!) was a highlight, as was the last song called "one off the first album". I'd never heard of Eden's Curse until Jay started this thread but they went down very well with the crowd and I was pleasantly surprised to see how many people were wearing EC t-shirts and singing along.

Check them out everyone, and good luck with the rest of the tour Jay.

PS: I'd never heard of Firewind either, but they rock! The majority of the crowd last night may disagree but in my opinion they blew Stratovarius away.

Stuart.

Thanks for posting the review, Stuart! Glad you got to meet Jay after the show. He's a cool dude! I have never met him personally, but I've heard a lot of cool stories.

As for Jay being a rock star... he has been one for years, but now he's finally getting more exposure. The dude can shred!

I hear ya about Firewind. I never heard of them either until a friend turned me on to them. A great and VERY tight band! Plus, Gus is unbelievable on the guitar!

'Rock Star' LOL! It felt like it believe me! And not in a big headed arrogant way...just nice to see that the fans were pleased and they enjoyed the shows, which went awesomely well...

Thanks for the write up Stuart. It was awesome meeting you at the show...The Scottish crowd was the best on the entire tour man! Absolutely rocked!!! We had a great response every night of the tour. There are a number of reviews on my website (http://www.jayparmar.com/Web/Pages/Latest.php) and I keep finding new ones which reflect the same sentiments...lots of people want to see us with more stage time or a headlining slot so we will be back with more shows :)

You're right about the crowds around the merch booth - we had that ever night as well. It was pretty wild, but like I said, we were all glad to meet everybody and know that they had a good time...

Firewind were awesome as well...really cool guys to hang out with. Really enjoyed their company. Bob even ended up using my Randall at the London show because fuse blew on his amp!

I'm deep in recording my next album now which is going really well - have a drummer and bass player working on parts now. I'm gonna re-record the gtr parts over the next few weeks...lots of work to get on with!
